Someone in the chat last night mentioned the Google Nexus One Android-powered smartphone.
It won’t be sold here, and it won’t work on Telstra’s Next G HSDPA network. See this article in The Australian for more details.
For our brethren abroad, here’s a nifty comparison chart courtesy of Tech Talk Radio’s US correspondent, Mark Diggins:

Apple's iPhone 3GS vs Google's Nexus 1
“It won’t be sold here”
YET, tho you can already get it for around $700
(source: http://www.shopbot.com.au/m/?m=nexus+one&order=lh&p1=400&p2=)
“and it won’t work on Telstra’s Next G HSDPA network”
yes it will. The Australian article you quoted is from January. Since then (March) the AT&T version on the same frequency as NextG (850MHz) has been announced (source: http://gizmodo.com/5494635/3g+ready-nexus-one-now-available-unlocked-on-att) for US$529 unlocked from Google (although Google has since shut its direct-sell store).
Thanks for the update Peter.
You’re right, it looks like there is a “Next G friendly” version now.
That’s good news for Telstra customers!
